Meet Tavian: Learning How to Fix Things on His Own

“HACC has made my life better by really giving me guidance into how I want to pursue my future.”

Structural engineering technology is a field that challenges you to think big – think bridges, airport terminals, towers, massive commercial buildings, feats of modern technology and design!

The big picture for Tavian Sumlin’s education could only come into view if it was affordable and convenient. That’s why he chose HACC. His experiences with faculty have reinforced that he made the right choice.

“Coming here I had in mind that professors and college staff wouldn’t care much about the life of the student body. Upon my first year here I have seen teachers ask about personal life goals and future plans and try to accommodate or aid in the student’s goal.”

In HACC’s program, Tavian is learning how to use computer-aided design and drafting technology and equipment, interpret technical drawings and take on team-based projects.
Tavian said, “One of the challenges that I have faced in my life is learning how to do things on my own. Not having the money to fix things on my own and get it professionally seen has led me to fixing things myself.”

After graduation, Tavian plans to enter the workforce and pursue his bachelor’s degree.
